CBSE claims more rural, women students have cleared JEE this year

After facing widespread criticism because of the new normalization method, CBSE has now claimed that due to the new pattern more number of women students and students from rural background have cleared JEE this year.

In 2013, 136 students from the rural background have made it to top thousand rankers while in 2012, the number was only 90. The number of rural students increased, so decreased the number of students from urban areas. Rural representation also showed gradual growth among first two, three and four thousand rank holders. Among the top 5,000 rankers, there were 861 students from rural background. In percentage terms 17.22% students among the top 5,000 were from rural India compared to 13.4% last year. Urban representation among the top 5,000 came down to 82.78% in 2013 from 86.6% last year.

Indian Statistical Institute spills beans about NIT admission goof up

Indian Statistical Institute (ISI), Kolkata, has revealed the story behind the normalization of class Xii and JEE (Main) that was used for admission in prestigious National Institutes of Technology (NITS).

Putting the entire blame on HRD Ministry and the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) for the normalization concept, ISI has distanced itself from the formula. It has said the suggestions made by the S K Joshi committee — of which the ISI was an important part — was partially disregarded.

MCI adds 50 more MBBS seats in Madhya Pradesh’s 5 colleges

Medical Council of India (MCI) has announced something good for all the medical students. MCI has increased the intake capacity of the five medical colleges in Madhya Pradesh. The number of seats for MBBS has been increased and all the seats will be available for admission for the session 2013-14.

“Approval to increase the intake capacity in medical colleges of state was pending. The approval letter has come now,” said minister of state for medical education Mahendra Hardia. Confirming that the seats will be open from session 2013-14, Dr Sanjay Dixit of MGM said, “Seats will be open for admission for the current academic session. We have scrutinized more than 600 students and seats will be allocated to 150 students after increase in number of seats.”

IIT-Madras has planned to conduct a workshop on ‘Construction and Demolition Waste Recycling’ in collaboration with the Indian Concrete Institute and the Central Public Works Department next week.

According to the organizers, increasing construction, maintenance, retrofitting and demolition activities across the country generate a considerable quantity of construction and demolition waste that is just dumped in landfills.

CCEA approves IIT-Hyderabad joint project with Japan

A joint project aiming at value addition for the newly created IIT-Hyderabad has been approved by the government along with an academic and industry interface between the institute and Japan.

The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs (CCEA) approved the ‘collaboration of IIT, Hyderabad and Japan’. This partnership will be executed through an Official Development Assistance (ODA) loan from the Japanese government and the Union HRD Ministry.

IIT – Bombay launches no-smoking campaign

‘ISmoke-I support the movement to kill cancer’, a no-smoking campaign has been launched by the Indian Institute of Technology, Bombay to encourage youth to quit smoking. The campaign has been launched in association with the Indian Cancer Society. The pan-India drive will visit 50 colleges in 12 cities and involve a signature campaign from January 3-5, 2014.

College students will be asked to write something about the drive. Two dummies will be used -a pink pair of lungs and the other a black cigarette, signifying that it is burnt. Sticky notes will be pasted on the cigarette. Students will have to peel it off, turn it over to the white side and sign on it. 2013 UPSC Prelims results to be declared in 1st week of August

The Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) has announced that the results for UPSC Prelims 2013 would be declared in the first week of August.

Candidates are notified that the UPSC Prelims results 2013 will be declared soon. Earlier the board had announced that the results would be declared on 27 July but the same did not happen due to some issues. Though the exact date has not yet been announced, the board is sure to declare the results of UPSC Prelims 2013 this week.

SCRA: List of recommended candidates declared

A list of 56 candidates for appointment as Special Class Railway Apprentices’ (SCRA) in the Indian Railways Service of Mechanical Engineers has been declared by the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC). UPSC had conducted a written examination for SCRA on 20 January, 2013 which was followed by a Personality Test. The final list of recommended candidates prepared in order of merit is based on the results of the written test and personality test.

CBSE to introduce Open Text Based Assessment

CBSE will introduce Open Text Based Assessment (OTBA) Concept for classes IX and XI from March, 2014. This concept will be implemented in the final exams as a part of the current academic session. According to the circular dated May 31, the CBSE has revealed that nearly 20 percent questions in a paper will be asked from case studies or text material provided to the students four months in advance.

The OTBA concept will be applicable to all subjects for class IX and only biology, geography & economics for class XI. This concept will help to instill analytical and theoretical skills in the students, thus discouraging memorization.
